Not His Best Work

Although I didn't really like this book, I never seriously thought of quitting before it was done. I guess that's a credit to the storytelling. I like reading about older people, how they see their lives now, if they're still able to change or have given up, etc. So this was good in that sense. I didn't care for the head-snapping back and forth style of careening from present day to flashbacks that were all over the place (not chronological). First Harriet is 78 (present day), then she's 50, then she's 78, then 17, then 78, then 35, then 7. It kept me from getting into the story. And then the voice of the narrator (which was actually Harriet's other self, the angry, smart-alecky one she might have become had she lived differently) was just annoying. I never understood what happened to Bernard (was he sentenced to nothingness or did he redeem himself?) By the end of the book I still didn't care about any of these characters.
